So, I've been building this website at work, and it looks fine and dandy when I look at it in Firefox, Internet Explorer 7, Opera, and even Safari.
I just looked at it in Internet Explorer 6.
I'M IN DESPAIR! THE CRAPPY HANDLING OF CSS IN INTERNET EXPLORER 6 HAS ME IN DESPAIR!!
The site's a complete mess in IE6... Arse. I'm going to have to work out how to fix that now, aren't I? If anyone knows any good sites on how to fudge your site to display properly on IE6 when it has no problem on any other browser, I'd be interested!
Edit: Ah. So IE6 can't understand 'min_height'. Pile of crap!

At this weekend's airshow at Waddington, the recently restored Vulcan XH558 appeared.
These pictures show it flying in formation with the BBMF Lancaster.
That must have been pretty damn impressive!
OO! Looky here!

summer holiday

Deckchairs, and a pier, with a funfair.
The only way this could be more of a stereotypical british seaside holiday picture would be if it was raining!
I had today off. So what to do. I was planning on going to Brighton, then getting a train from there to Worthing or maybe Shoreham. The idea was that I could come back to Brighton in the afternoon, check out Dave's Comics, and end with a pint in the Evening Star. (Hylder Blonde. Very nice it was too. Hope they get it in Clarets soon.)
But I set off later than originally planned, and couldn't be arsed going anywhere else. Still managed to meet the basic criteria for going to Brighton, though.
First time i've taken my DSLR out of the house in over a year. Some time ago, I picked up a 500mm mirror lens, which equates to 800mm once you add the 1.6x conversion factor. I need to process the RAWs before I post more pictures, but here's one.

Nice.

The Ocean Waves is one of the 'forgotten' Studio Ghibli movies. It's not had a US or European release (although I've read it is due to get a UK release any time now).
I bought my copy from Japan, where Ghibli's DVDs include English subtitles.
It all starts when a guy standing on a railway station platform sees a girl he recognises on the platform opposite. Trains come in, and when they go, she's gone.
Later, on a 'plane, Taku thinks of how he and the girl, who's name is Rikako, first met two years ago at high school, and what happened afterwards. The school trip to Hawaii, Taku's unexpected and disastrous trip to Tokyo with Rikako, and the romantic triangle between Taku, Rikako, and Taku's friend Yutaka.
All comes to a head after the school reunion...
It's very much a romantic slice of life / rite of passage story, with no fantasy elements.
I'm a bit of a fan of romantic comedy anime, there are some good ones out there and this is well worth watching.
Have a clip.

So, the final episode of the current series of Doctor Who airs on Saturday.
Time for a poll.

There's been this thing in the news about Prince Charles running his Aston Martin DB5 on bioethanol made out of surplus British wine.
1. SURPLUS wine?
2. Is British wine really that bad?
3.You poured it on a fish? You put it in your car?
The supplier said (quoted in today's Guardian) "The best way to produce ethanol on any scale is effectively to brew beer and distil the ethanol out."
But what's the point? By then, you'd have BEER!
And you'd be too drunk to drive anyway.

This is the clip I was looking for.
The scene just after the 2 minute mark.
It's not a model. It really IS a Spitfire, flown by the late Ray Hanna, and it really DID fly under the bridge, with just feet to spare.
( and here's another classic. Contains swearing )

Excellent sound, turn up the speakers!

Got a lesson booked for 4:30. I don't normally book that late in the day, but I had a choice between 8:30am or 4:30pm, so I went for the one that didn't involve getting up earlier than I do on a weekday!
But while this meant I could have a nice lie-in this morning, it also means that there's really nothing much I can be doing today as I'll be leaving in about an hour and a half's time.
I much prefer 12:30, with 10:30 or 2:30 as my second choices.
It may not even happen, as the TAF is giving gusts of 26 knots, which is well above the crosswind limit of the aeroplane. The current METAR gives a 10 knot crosswind, which is within the limit, but still, er, "fun".
Edit: D'oh! Bit of a booking mistake, so no flying today, lack of available instructor.
Sadly I'm not current enough to solo, so that's it.

BBC: Treasury chief on 'wombat leave'
Australia's top treasury official is taking five weeks leave to look after endangered wombats.
Ken Henry, treasury secretary and animal conservationist, has warned that hairy-nosed wombats are "on death row".

But opposition politicians - and even wombat lovers - question if now is the time to be thinking about wombats.
Inflation is at a 16-year high, interest rates are up and fuel prices are rising. Mr Henry will also miss a central bank meeting.
Mr Henry will be looking after 115 hairy-nosed wombats in an isolated spot in northern Queensland, with no mobile phone coverage and two-and-a-half hours on a rough track from the nearest town.
...
An editorial in the Daily Telegraph noted that "given half a chance, most of us would happily take several weeks off work to play with wombats in their native environment. But most of us aren't the Treasury Secretary."
"I think we all love the hairy-nosed wombat," opposition politician Brendan Nelson said.

I had this odd dream last night. Can't remember how it started, but for some reason I wound up at a Dangercon.
wag_9393 had planted some beans and was trying to grow a beanstalk.

Then Simo turned up.
Suddenly, I'm watching this on my TV as rain pours out of a cloudless sky. Simo appears distorted in the rain streaked lens, and shouts 'BUM!'
That's when the alarm goes off.

So, because
johncoxon will probably get a laugh out of it even if nobody else does, here's the weirdest thing I've come across all week...
Transformers Yaoi.

Read this story about the crop sprayer. He'd spent all day flying along at bugger-all feet spraying crops. End of the day, he gets in his car and drives off home. As he drives towards the gate, he sees the gate is shut so he just pulls back on the steering wheel....

Unnecessary

I was waiting for the train, when I stretched out and leaned my head back, to see the light on. "That's a bit unnecessary", I thought, given that it was a bright sunny day.
It's also a bit ironic, as during the winter months, when it's quite dark at that time of night, the very same light never, ever works!
